Cancel insurance only after the car has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Until both are done, you may still legally own the vehicle, so canceling early can leave you exposed to an uninsured loss.
If the Minnesota DMV requires any plate return, plate transfer, registration cancellation, or registration notice before insurance is removed, do that first. Then call your insurer and use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Start with the facts. Make sure the vehicle is no longer in your possession and that you signed and handed over the title as instructed. Use the same date for both records if pickup and title hand-off happened together. If pickup is still pending, do not cancel yet. Keep coverage in place until the vehicle has left and the title hand-off is complete.
Handle plates and registration first
Before removing insurance, check whether your registration record needs a plate return, plate transfer, registration cancellation, or owner notice. States handle this differently. Some require a registration or plate step before insurance ends; others do not. If you are unsure which applies, follow the Minnesota DMV process before you call the insurer. Keep any receipt, confirmation number, or filed notice with your donation records.
Call with the donation date
Call the insurer after pickup and title hand-off are complete. Tell the representative the car was donated and give the date the vehicle was picked up and the title was transferred. Ask that the insurance change use that date as the effective date. Do not use an earlier date, because that can create a gap while the car was still yours.
Remove or cancel coverage
If the policy covers more than one vehicle, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Confirm the other vehicles and drivers stay covered. If this was your only vehicle on the policy, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. One coverage note: if you will drive another car soon, ask the insurer how to avoid an unwanted gap in continuous insurance history.
Request the prorated refund
If you paid ahead, ask whether a prorated refund is due from the effective date through the unused policy period. The refund amount depends on your policy terms and billing status, so let the insurer calculate it. Ask how the refund will be sent and when you should expect to see it. If a loan or autopay account was used, confirm where the money will go.
Keep written confirmation
Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, the policy change, and the effective date. An email, policy declaration update, cancellation notice, or account message is usually enough. Save it with your pickup receipt, title copies or photos, plate/registration receipts, and donation records. If the insurer later bills you, this confirmation is the document you use to correct the account.
Refunds and records to save
Most insurers can return unused premium when coverage ends after a prepaid period, but the final amount depends on the policy, billing cycle, and any unpaid balance. Ask for the refund as part of the same call so it does not get missed. Save the written insurance confirmation, proof of pickup, title hand-off record, plate or registration confirmation, and any refund message. If your paperwork list is getting long, see our release-of-liability guide. Keep everything in one folder until your final policy bill or refund clears.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance before pickup if the car is leaving soon?
No. Keep the vehicle insured until pickup and title hand-off are complete. If the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before then, you may still be the legal owner. Early cancellation can also cause registration or insurance-lapse problems in some states. Do not risk it.
What if the donated car was on a multi-car policy?
Do not cancel the whole policy unless you mean to end coverage for every vehicle on it. Ask the insurer to remove the donated car only, effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. Then confirm the remaining cars, listed drivers, discounts, and billing method are still correct.
What if it was my only insured car?
Ask the insurer to cancel the policy, not just remove a vehicle, and make the cancellation effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you will borrow, buy, or regularly drive another vehicle soon, ask about continuous coverage options so you do not create an insurance-history gap you did not intend.
Will I receive a prorated refund?
You may, if you prepaid beyond the effective cancellation or removal date and your policy has no offsetting balance. Ask the insurer to calculate any unused premium, confirm how it will be paid, and send written confirmation. Refund timing and method depend on your policy and billing setup.

Once pickup, title hand-off, any required plate or registration step, and the insurance change are complete, you can stop paying for coverage on the donated car with cleaner records.
